Are these Invisible Tweets

This is what i was always looking forward to since I joined Twitter, many times i used to think that how about if one day i tweet and it will disappear. And this is what happened with me last night.

I was about to sleep so i thought of saying goodbye to all my twitter friends and I simply typed ” #Off ” on tweetdeck and pressed enter. And i saw that it didn’t appear in my timeline as a tweet, I thought it can be tweetdeck’s lag so I opened my twitter profile on browser and there also – tweet was not there.

In curiosity I again tweeted “#Off ” from my web browser; this time also tweet disappeared. I was like “OMG is this called an Invisible Tweet”. And without thinking much i typed ” #On ” from my browser and the miracle happened again – tweet disappeared. The increasing curiosity forced me to search about this on google and look what i found.

These are no Invisible Tweets but just Twitter Text Commands

Did you know you can perform certain actions, like following or marking a friend’s update as a favorite, by using the designated Twitter commands? Use the commands listed below from your phone, the web update box, or your favorite third party application.

Please note : When using these commands, do not append an @ along with it. For example, if you want to turn on device notifications send only ON and not @ON. If you send these commands with an @, your commands will be read as a username and will not be executed as expected!

Turning Mobile Twitter Updates Off and On

ON: turns ALL your authorized Twitter updates and notifications on.
OFF: turns off all updates except direct messages. Send STOP again to turn off direct messages too.
STOP, QUIT, End, Cancel, Arret or Unsubscribe: turns ALL phone notifications off.
ON username: turns on notifications for a specific person on your phone. Example: ON alissa
OFF username: turns off notifications for a specific person on your phone. Example: OFF blaine
FOLLOW username: this command allows you to start following a specific user, as well as receive SMS notifications. Example: FOLLOW jerry
LEAVE username: this command allows you to stop receiving SMS notifications for a specific user. Example: LEAVE benfu

Fun Stuff: friends, favorites, and stats!
Use the commands below to send private messages, favorite Tweets, and more.

@username + message
Reply: shows your Tweet as a reply directed at another person, and causes your twitter to save in their “replies” tab.
Example: @meangrape I love that song too!

D username + message
Direct Message: sends a person a private message that goes to their device, and saves in their web archive.
Example: d krissy want to pick a Jamba Juice for me while you’re there?

FAV username
Favorite a Tweet: marks a person’s last twitter as a favorite and causes the message to show up in your “Favorites” tab.

RT username
Retweet: sends another user’s latest Tweet to your followers.

SET LOCATION placename
Updates the location field in your profile. Example: set location san francisco

WHOIS username
Retrieves the profile information for any public user on Twitter. Example: whois jack

GET username
Retrieves the latest Twitter update posted by the person. Example: get goldman

FAV username
Marks that user’s last Tweet as one of your favorites. (hint: reply to any update with FAV to mark it as a favorite if you’re receiving it in real time)
Example: fav crystal

STATS
This command returns your number of followers, how many people you’re following, and your bio information.

So my dream of invisible tweets is still a dream but i learn a lot, so thought sharing with you all. If you already knew about it feel free to surf other articles here..

5 level Facebook Secured Privacy

Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Facebook recently said “In next couple of weeks you can see some very simple and more user controlled privacy options on your account.” So here are the new settings disclosed.

Before these new privacy settings users have to configure around 50 settings and now only 15 settings.

The new privacy setting has a Basic Directory Information that will help real world friends find you, some basic information is open to everyone. We also suggest setting basics like hometown and interests to everyone so friends can use those to connect with you.

Apart from this Facebook have introduced a 5 level simplified setting also

Level 1 : Everyone

Level 2 : Friends of Friends

Level 3 : Friends Only

Level 4 : Recommended

Level 5 : Customized

Why Social Media gives a X-Factor

When comparing social media traffic to other forms of traffic, such as search engine, the numbers typically are going to look rather bleak. While you’ll hopefully see a spike in number of visitors and pageviews, that will often be accompanied by higher bounce rates, lower pageviews per visitor, and a lower average time on the site. With stats like this many bloggers wonder if social media traffic is even worth the time and effort.

Despite the tendency of many social media visitors to quickly exit your site and move on to the next one, there are still some very convincing reasons why you should care about social media and why it is worth your time.

1. It’s Free

Unless you’re paying for a consultant or a link bait specialist (both can be good options), marketing your website with social media is free. It will cost you some time, but that pales in comparison to the value of the traffic that you can get in return. There are countless ways to market a website or blog. Just about all of them involve spending money (which isn’t a bad thing), and of the ones that don’t involve money, the vast majority of them are a complete waste of time. I’ve never tried any other type of free marketing that brought even 1% of the results I’ve gotten with social media at my primary blog. Most bloggers are on a tight, or non-existent, budget when it comes to marketing. If this is the case, social media is for you.

2. Quick Results

Building a successful website takes a considerable amount of time and effort. Search engine rankings, for instance, can take years to build in a competitive niche. On the other hand, with social media you can develop content and be seen by thousands of visitors within the same day. For this reason, social media is a great option for getting a new website or blog noticed right away .

3. It’s Flexible

There are so many different social media websites that just about every imaginable niche is covered in one way or another. There are social news sites, bookmarking sites, and general networking sites. Whatever your needs and your audience, there should be an option to use social media for your benefit.

Also, you’re not stuck to using the same social media sites over and over. If you’re not getting results in one place there’s usually other options that you can try out.

4. It Gets Easier with Time

If you’re new to blogging and social media and you feel like everyone else is getting traffic but you, understand that it takes some time and effort, but it will get easier. Once you have established a bit of a reader base and you’ve hopefully attracted some social media users to your blog, it will be much easier for you to get votes and ultimately get more exposure. The more you use social media the more you will understand about how it works and how users will respond.

5. It Will Lead to Other Valuable Sources of Traffic

Although visitors from social media sites may be less responsive than other types of visitors, success with social media will likely increase the number of inbound links you receive. Links will boost your search engine rankings and they’ll also drive click-through traffic your way. Both are generally high quality traffic sources.

6. Building Links with Social Media is Safer than Buying Links

If you plan to cut out the need for social media by purchasing links from other sites, you’re running the risk of being penalized or banned by Google. For some, this is a risk worth taking, but in most cases I would strongly discourage taking this chance. Personally, I focus on building links for my primary blog through the combination of content and social media.

7. Social Media Users are Predictable

The whole concept or link bait or Digg bait wouldn’t even be possible if social media users were unpredictable. But the truth is you can usually have a good idea of what is likely to draw a response and what is not. This will come with time, and of course there is no 100% guarantee. However, once you know a social media audience pretty well, you can cater content to their preferences with a pretty high success rate. What you learn about social media can easily be duplicated to your other blogs or to serving clients.

8. It Doesn’t Require as Much Time as You Might Think

Personally, I use social media every day, but on a very limited basis. If you think that you have to spend all day on Digg or Stumbling pages to get some results of your own, you may be surprised. With the right approach you canget fantastic results with just a few hours per week on social media sites. To be a top Digg user you’ll need more time than that, but being a top Digg user isn’t necessary to draw social media traffic.

9. Branding Through Social Media is Possible

One of the great benefits to the exposure that you can get through social media is the result it has on the branding of your blog. Branding is key to building a success blog in the long-term, and social media is an excellent, free option for helping visitors to see your blog in a particular light. 10. Links Can Help Your Search Engine Rankings Rise Quickly

Earlier I mentioned to social media can provide instant results. Well, in addition to sending loads of traffic directly, the links that result from social media success can get your new posts ranking very well with search engines almost immediately. It’s not uncommon for me to see a very respectable number of visitors from Google searches to a brand new post that just drew a lot of links through social media. While it will take a while to build search engine rankings as a whole, it is possible to create specific posts to rank well right away.

11. It Allows You to Leverage Your Existing Traffic

Do you already have a solid blog with a steady flow of traffic? If so, chances are you could leverage that traffic to draw even more visitors with social media. You may want to use voting buttons on your posts or ask some of your readers and friends to give you a vote occasionally.

12. Some Visitors Will Be Targeted

The biggest knock on social media traffic is that it’s not targeted, and that is typically true. However, visitors from niche social media sites can be very highly targeted, and on top of that, a portion of visitors from general news sites will be targeted as well. For example, if you get 25,000 visitors from a post on the Digg front page, maybe only 5,000 of them will have much of an interest in your site. Still, that’s a quick 5,000 visitors that you wouldn’t have had without social media. Just because a smaller percentage of the visitors will stick doesn’t mean that they are irrelevant.

13. The Future of the Internet is Social

Social media and social networking aren’t going away any time soon. The major players and the types of social sites may change of the course of time, but this is a trend that online marketers need to adjust to. Without finding ways to build a website or blog through social media you could be left behind by your competitors.

SEO vs SEM

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of creating or adapting web pages so that they are easily indexible by Search engine spiders. SEO includes “optimizing” factors on the page to help computer programs to identify the content that is contained on the page. SEO includes paying attention to “on-page” factors like text, meta tags, file names, and other information in the page “source” code. As search engines have become more sophisticated, Search Engine Optimization has grown to include “off-page” factors like building links from other sites.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a strategy that includes using SEO to be able to get a given page to have a high rank within search engine results and then to use those results to market a product or service. This means not only giving thought to the combination of “on-page” and “off-page” factors to help your page get indexed, but also building the information in such a way as to help consumers buy from your page.

SEM also includes SEO (search engine optimization) – the practice of making your site friendly to search engines “organically”. This is done without purchasing additional ads or paying to have your site listed first, instead, it relies on making your website attractive to search engines so that the site will come up early on the result page. These techniques include using inbound links, keywords and coding like special META tags to make your site more friendly to web crawlers – the programs that find new content on the web.

As I said SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is actually one element of SEM, or Search Engine Marketing. Search Engine Optimization is the process of configuring, or optimizing your website with the appropriate keywords you wish to be associated with, in a manner that will make it easily “seen” by search engines. Some of the more common SEO tactics include:

1. Having Keyword rich web pages
2. Having Keywords in the title of your pages
3. Having Keywords in your domain name
4. Naming the images in your site using keywords
5. Naming the Alt tags of images using keywords

Search Engine Marketing is the process and the methods used to promote your site to search engines. The most common tools are:

3. Video Marketing
4. Social Network Marketing
5. PPC, or Pay Per Click Advertising

No SEM campaign is complete without SEO. Moreover, since the purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and users, you may find that it will suffice on its own.

Defining the different ways to be social

There are different types of social on the web and each category has a different focus (with some overlap in functionality):

Social Networking is probably the most widely known Web 2.0 term. FromMySpace to Facebook, LinkedIn, and other similar sites, the focus of social networking is to connect you with others – your friends, people with similar interests, potential employers, and then give you the opportunity to find more connections as your profile grows.
Social Bookmarking (like del.icio.us, Furl, Ma.gnolia) sites allow you to organize your favorite sites, tag them for keywords, and keep them all in one place. Very handy. However, what makes these sites social, is the ability for you to share them with others.
Social Recommendation sites combine the best of social networking and bookmarking to create user generated recommendation sites. Sites likeDigg, Netscape and StumbleUpon encourage users to submit items they like and then give others the opportunity to vote on them. There are also a large crop of smaller niche sites like BizzBites, Sk*rt, Babblz, BUMPzee and such that are evolving to cater to the specific needs of certain audiences.
Social Content sites include Flickr, YouTube, and wikis to name a few. These are sites where users create and manage the content from photos to videos, information on a topic, and everything in between.
Other sites such as MyBlogLog, Technorati, and Blog Catalog give users the ability to network, bookmark and recommend all under one handy roof.

Making the most of your social life

Get a good avatar. It is much easier to remember a picture than words, which is why avatars are so popular with the social crowd. Avatars help you create your social identity. Recommended avatars include a clear photo of yourself, your site/company logo, image that is easily identified.
Be consistent with your identity. While it may make sense to have one identity for your business site and another for a personal or niche site, you don’t want to have 5 different user names for 5 different sites. It just makes it too hard to define your personal brand and it makes it difficult for your friends at one site to find you at another.
Don’t spread yourself too thin! The number of social media sites is growing daily and you just can’t be everywhere. Pick a few sites that provide you with value – sites where your peers are – and establish yourself.
Be active! Once you have found the sites you want to use to build your social presence – work them! Make friends, vote for articles, share your links. Your site traffic will thank you for it!
