Becoming famous or becoming popular on Twitter is just not about having a large number of followers, but it is also about building a huge network with people, communicating with them, having conversations, and sharing knowledge. Let me share with you few points which i feel are most important to be famous or popular on Twitter.

Your Profile

Start off with having an outstanding profile image, a close up will work more. And remember not to change it so often. This I have learnt from (@Flipbooks).

After having a good display pic, there comes your bio. Bio is short description about you. It should be attractive and precise enough that your follower will have a good idea about your interests and passion. Writing something which you are not or may be to show off will not work for a longer period.

Sharing

I think twitter is all about sharing. The 140 characters we share as a tweet can be anything, it can be a link share by your favorite blogger, it can be an awesome quote you want to share with your followers, it can be an image, it can be a product, and it can be anything.

It’s recommended that you share by mentioning the source. This will help you in building your repo. If you share tweets of people on a regular practice, they will notice you and will return your favour by doing the same.

Be Thankful publicly

Say Thanks & Say it often. Saying thanks to the one who shared your links, tweets, quotes, blog posts, products, services, anything will make your reputation. This is not gonna take much of your time. Returning their favour by a simple thank you is the best you can do apart from doing the same. My personal opinion about this is – it will be great if you thank somebody by tweets and mentions rather than by direct messages (DM).

You should be also thankful to people who support you, or maybe those who taught you something. Like I am thankful to @myliciouss @0nikhil @BarryckR @gupshupblog @Raj_R @mtaram @arraysaq @rocksstar10 @shilpiz @rajupp @arkarthick @MASisMore 2morrowknight and many more in the list who always support me and I like to converse with them.

Complain someone privately

Unlike Thanking somebody, making a complain to anybody should be done privately. Being a normal human being nobody likes to publicize what they have done wrong. So we should take care that when we want complain anything we do it through DMs not by normal tweets. This I have learnt from (@labnol)

Retweeting

Retweeting tweets is a powerful way to get popular, by retweeting you are attracting people to notice you in a very welcomed manner. To know more about power of retweeting click here.

Follow Others

Following others on twitter is the best way to build a great network. You can follow anyone there is no restriction for that on twitter. But remember one thing most of the people follow passively (the person you started following is not aware about it), and that is not the efficient way of doing it.

The best way to follow is shouting out that you are following them (like: #NowFollowing @adamsconsulting @paul_steele @iampramit @RainerGS), this will let them know that you are now following them and may be they can get back to your profile and hopefully they will follow you back.

Follow Trending Topics

Keeping a track and following the trending topics will also make you popular. Here you need to understand that, your tweets should make sense; you should tweet something interesting, funny, catchy, anything that you think will attract people of your interest.

Don’t just shout out anything because you just want to be in the trending topics, this will distract your existing followers.

Troubleshoot problems

Many a times you will see people asking few questions they have stuck up with. These questions may be of your interest or maybe not. If you know how to solve the issue don’t take a set back and share your knowledge, this will make you popular.

And if the question is not of your interest or you don’t know the solution, It will be great if you share that question among your followers.

1. Explain to your followers what retweeting is (if they dont know) and encourage them to retweet your links.Retweeting pushes your @username into foreign social graphs, resulting in clicks back to your profile. Track your retweets using retweetist.
2. As @garyvee says, “link it up.” Put links to your Twitter profile everywhere. Link it on your Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature, and everywhere else you live online. Also, check out the great feedburner-like badges from TwitterCounter for your blog.
3. Tweet about your passions in life and #hash tag them. Quality content coupled with an easy way to find it never fails. If others enjoy your content, they’ll add you. Learn more about #hash tagging here.
4. Bring your twitter account into the physical world. Every time I give a talk, speak on a panel, shoot a podcast, present slides, or hand out business cards, I figure out a way to broadcast or display my twitter account.
5. Take pictures. Pictures are heavily retweeted/spread around. This one from US Airways Flight 1549 has been viewed 350,000+ times. For mobile pics use iPhone apps such as Tweetie or Twitterific, both which support on the go uploading.
6. Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet. Pay attention to the type of content they sent out and how they address their audiences.
7. Reply to/get involved in #hash tag memes. search.twitter.com lists the hot ‘trending topics. Look for the #hash topics and jump in on the conversation (see #4 for links to #hash instructions).
8. Track your results. TwitterCounter will show you how many new users you’re adding per day and Qwitter will email you when someone unfollows you after a tweet.
